Months ago, I received an email from my friend Kristen about joining a group of mothers, in order to create a blog geared for mothers. The blog would be Mom Heart, stemming from Sally Clarkson's Mom Heart Conferences.
She asked if I would be able to contribute along the lines of hospitality with children & family. Humbled to say the least would be an understatement. This mere young woman, with two littles herself and one on the way...who am I to write on such a topic to encourage mothers. Mothers possibly older than myself. Mothers who knew more. I walk in grace.
The humility bucket poured over me, leaving me feel "not enough" for such a job as this. Reading through Sally's ministry, heart, & her book Mission to Motherhood, left me full. Full that I could indeed do the real job that was being asked of me...mothering.
God uses the most inadequate beings to shower his tablecloths of redemption.
That is what I find appealing about Mom Heart Blog. It's not that any of the writers have it together. It's about encouraging other mamas of the mess that we make, but doing the best we can with the grace & love of a Savior who can. We get to help him spread out that tablecloth. Him teaching us as we teach our children the same.
I've been encouraged through Sally's words, because they are not Christian fundamentalism, which frighten me. Rather, what I have found is words of grace. Speaking the heart of Jesus to me as God's daughter & mother to my children.
I have struggled with hearing women finding all their fulfillment in being mother, while neglecting their own spiritual & physical needs. As if we had to pick one over the other. Sally writes in The Mission of Motherhood,
And yet over the years I have come to realize something else about my role as a mother. As important as my role is, and as important as my children are, they are not to be the center of my life, and my central life calling is not to motherhood. That would not only make for very selfish children, but it could even become a form of idolatry.
My calling as a mother is the same as any other Christian's: to fulfill God's will for our lives and to glorify him.
She goes on to talk about ways in which she fulfills God's will & glorifies him, through the serving love towards her husband & children. Yet, still, it is the calling of being a child of the Most High. Our identity should rest in this, while everything else is a role in which we hold.
For me, this role as mama is one I take very seriously and put above many other roles in this life. This is why I am thankful to be apart of the Mom Heart blog team & ministry, and why I would love for you to come & stay a while. I know you will find encouragement & grace there.

You can win one of these books
In The Mission of Motherhood Sally moves beyond inspiration and encouragement, to instruction, vision, and mission as she explores the biblical design of God for mothers that transcends cultures and trends.
Drawing on challenging insights from Scripture enlightened by her own experiences as a mother for 18 years, Sally draws a biblical and very personal portrait of motherhood that reveals the heart of God for all mothers of all times. This book, filled with personal anecdotes and stories, will refresh your vision for biblical motherhood, renew your commitment to your precious children, and prayerfully bring the reviving Spirit of God into your home and family.
A follow-up companion to The Mission of Motherhood. In a more personal and devotional style, Sally addresses how mothers can effectively reach the precious lives entrusted to their care by looking to the life and ministry of Jesus. She examines the relationship between Jesus and his disciples, and incorporates a plan for influencing children for Christ using the acrostic GIFTS: Grace, Inspiration, Faith, Training and Service. It is an uncomplicated, yet strategic, plan for passing on crucial gifts to your children. In the dailyness of providing for your children’s physical, emotional and social needs, GIFTS provides a way to insure that vital opportunities for spiritual nurture and training are not lost in the shuffle.
Using biblical wisdom and practical teachings, Sally shows how you can make a lasting difference in your child’s life by following the pattern Christ set with his own disciples; a model that will inspire and equip you to intentionally embrace the rewarding, desperately needed, and immeasurably valuable ministry of motherhood.
A classic book of encouragement for your seasons as a homeschooling mother. Your heart will be encouraged as you read the touching stories, spiritual insights, and personal lessons that are the seasons in Sally Clarkson’s life. She opens her own seasoned heart on these pages, sharing what she has learned as a homeschooling wife and mother about herself, her children, and her Lord. First published in 1998, this revised and expanded Second Edition includes four new essays by Sally from “ten years later” to introduce each section.
This book gave birth to many "Seasons" groups of moms all around the country and world reading the chapters together and going the discussion and Bible study that accompanies each chapter. Those groups became the model for what are now Mom Heart small groups, part of the growing small groups movement of Mom Heart Ministry. It still is a favorite for group study by Christian and homeschooling moms.
Dancing with My Father is Sally Clarkson’s personal journey to discover how to live a life of grace and joy in the Lord. As a busy Christian woman in a world often filled with disappointments, difficulties, and even desparing moments, Sally wanted to know how to experience the presence of God and the spiritual joy promised so often in the Scriptures.
She shares how she learned to “Rejoice in the Lord always!” and in all seasons of life. If you feel a need to be refreshed and restored in the joy of the Lord, join Sally as she shares the secrets of Dancing with My Father.
